THE PROJECT DEMONSTRATES SAINT LUCIA’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
The official launch of Anchorage on the Waterfront, formerly known as the Castries Market Box Park, marks a significant milestone in enhancing visitor experiences in Saint Lucia and fostering economic growth.
At the launch ceremony, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Donalyn Vittet, emphasized that Anchorage on the Waterfront is more than just a commercial space—but a symbol of progress and innovation.
“This facility is not just a collection of shops or a home for the Saint Lucia Marketing Board or food and beverage outlets. It is a testament to our commitment to enhancing visitor experiences and enriching the lives of our residents,” Vittet said.
The development is part of the OECS Regional Competitiveness Project (ORTCP), initiated in 2013 under then Minister of Tourism, Lorne Theophilus. Despite initial setbacks, government secured financing in 2017, leading to the project's commencement with the support of the World Bank. In 2021, the initiative underwent strategic restructuring to better serve the community and advance tourism development.
Vittet further highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding similar initiatives across the island, announcing upcoming projects at the Morne layby, in Choiseul, Canaries, Hansford Park, and including an Underwater Sculpture Park.
“We take pride in the completion of our projects, but even more so in the opportunities they create for our people,” she noted.
Minister for Tourism, Investment, and Creative Industries, Hon. Dr. Ernest Hilaire, underscored the project’s role in driving economic transformation, reinforcing its significance beyond conventional commerce.
“This facility is designed for Saint Lucians to own and earn a livelihood from the tourism sector while also serving as a destination for locals to enjoy. It is a tourism-oriented project, not just another shopping experience, but one that showcases the best of Saint Lucia to the world.”
Anchorage on the Waterfront comprises 22 commercial units. The Saint Lucia Marketing Board will manage the facility and also operates two of the units. The remaining spaces will be occupied by food and beverage enterprises and other businesses, further stimulating local entrepreneurship and employment.
The initiative represents a major step in Saint Lucia’s commitment to sustainable tourism and economic development, ensuring that both locals and visitors benefit from a revitalized, world-class marketplace.
