THE SLBWA WILL HOST A SERIES OF ACTIVITIES DURING THE MONTH OF MAY.

The Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association (SLBWA) officially launches Blindness Awareness Month 2025 under the inspiring theme: “Advocacy Begins with Me - Illuminating Paths to Inclusion.”

This year’s observance underscores the power of both individual and collective advocacy in breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive society for persons who are blind or visually impaired.

Throughout the month of May, SLBWA will lead a series of activities aimed at raising awareness, promoting accessibility, and encouraging positive action.

Key events include:

  • Annual General Meeting – May 2
  • Global Accessibility Awareness Day Activity – May 15
  • Shiatsu Demonstrations
  • Blindfold Walk – May 29
  • Braille Reading in Schools
  • Social and Media Awareness Campaigns – Ongoing

Additional highlights include the launch of SLBWA’s Advocacy Plan, a student forum, staff development workshops, and community outreach visits. Each initiative is designed to deepen public understanding and celebrate the talents, resilience, and contributions of people living with visual impairments.

“As we observe Blindness Awareness Month 2025, we are reminded that true advocacy begins with each of us,” said Miss Jessica Jacobie, Chairperson of the Blindness Awareness Month Committee. “This theme is a call to action encouraging every citizen to help illuminate the path to inclusion through awareness, empathy, and everyday support.”

SLBWA invites all Saint Lucians, individuals, schools, community groups, public agencies, and businesses to participate in the month’s events and reaffirm their shared commitment to a society that leaves no one behind.
