His vision, they said, helped define the country’s education sector.

Hunter J. Francois was laid to rest on Tuesday.

Family, friends and well-wishers gathered at the Cathedral of the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception to bid a final farewell to the former parliamentarian.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony, who called Francois, “the last of the great politicians” said he was a man of great character.

“Hunter J. Francois has been described in many ways: a man cast far beyond his time; a man of impeccable prose and diction; and an icon of immense complexity,” Dr. Anthony said. “Hunter had a rare, searching, and powerful intellect. His thirst for knowledge was never quenched. Like Sir Arthur Lewis, he believed in the transformative power of education. Without question, he was a good and just soul. He was guided ultimately by worthy principles and fastidious intellect.”

Former Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Vaughn Lewis said Francois’ accomplishments and vision helped define the country’s education sector.

“He was fortunate to have the fullest cooperation and support of some of the most capable and dedicated public servants this island has ever seen. But by common consensus, there is no denying the extent of his vision which defined the accomplishments of that time,” Dr. Lewis said. “For many Saint Lucians, these accomplishments in turn identified Hunter Francois as the dominant practical influence in education during, and well beyond that period.”

Hunter Francois passed away at the Tapion Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the age of 91.
