The proposed amendment addressed the practice of religion.

At a recent sitting of the House of Assembly, two bills were brought before Parliament—the first being a plan of arrangement for the British American Insurance Company (BAICO), and the second being an elections amendment.

The latter, which focused on amending the days when the close of nominations for elections can be called, drew heated debate.

Many ministers including the Minister with responsibility for External Affairs, Hon. Sarah Flood-Beaubrun, voiced opinions on the matter.

“I wish to commend the government for bringing this very important bill to the House," Mrs. Flood-Beaubrun said. "This amendment to the Elections Act is not complicated, and there is no need for it to go to a Committee of the House. It is unfortunate that we have to bring this legislation here to protect such a fundamental right, respecting the practice of someone's faith and religion.

"I want to assure the Christian community in Saint Lucia that this government will do what is necessary to ensure that people can practice their faith freely."

Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Growth, Job Creation, External Affairs and Public Service, the Hon. Allen Chastanet sought leave of the House to enable both bills to go through all stages at the sitting.

The sitting commenced at 10 a.m. on Feb. 7.
