Among the highlights for Suicide Prevention Week is a panel discussion on the signs of mental illness.

The National Mental Wellness Centre is, this week, displaying the creative work of its clients. The exhibition forms part of the activities being held in observance of Suicide Prevention Week.

Executive Director of Mental Wellness Services, Charmaine Hippolyte-Thomas spoke of the exhibition’s importance.

“This year’s theme is about preventing suicide and reaching out, so we want to allow the community and the family to be part it,” she said. “Also we would like persons to become more aware of mental health issues and the many ways we can take care of our mental health.”

Among the highlights for Suicide Prevention Week is a panel discussion from 7 - 9 p.m. today, at the Castries Town Hall. The activity is open to the public and will discuss the signs of mental illness.

“Persons who are in difficulty usually need someone to listen. Of course, they will not always be bold enough request help, so the public and family members need to be able to recognize signs that could indicate changes in mood and behavior,” Thomas said.

Suicide Prevention Day is recognized annually on Sep. 10. The exhibition will run until Friday, Sep. 11.

Those needing help can access wellness centres around the island, which also provide social work services and counseling. Those who don't wish to use the public system can access private counselors and psychiatrists via the National Health Helpline, 203, for free consultation.
