The Government of Saint Lucia joins the global community in observing World Food Day 2025 under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future.”

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre and the stewardship of Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development Hon. Alfred Prospere, the Government continues to work hand in hand with farmers, communities, and partners to strengthen food security, boost agricultural productivity, and build resilience against climate challenges.

Since July 2021, the Government has implemented targeted programmes and investments to transform the agricultural landscape, empower farmers, modernise production, and expand access to sustainable livelihoods across Saint Lucia.

Key Actions on Food Security and Farmer Support include:
· $3 million provided to the National Fair Trade Organisation (NFTO) to support banana production and marketing.

· $4 million in additional financing for banana recovery efforts.

· $1 million compensation package for banana farmers affected by the Winera Boxing Plant box shortage.

· $1.8 million in relief support for farmers impacted by the shortage of oil to treat Black Sigatoka disease.

· Distribution of over 9,000 bags of fertiliser to improve soil quality and increase yields.

· Implementation of a national seed distribution programme to promote kitchen and community gardening, expand household food production, and support local farmers.

· Provision of 1,000-gallon water tanks to over 1,000 farmers to improve irrigation and climate resilience.

· Launch of the Regional Agri-Insurance Programme (REAP) — making Saint Lucia the first OECS country to provide insurance protection for banana and plantain farmers.

· Establishment of a hydroponic facility at the Union Agricultural Station to promote modern, climate-smart production.

· Training of 25 women in small-scale mushroom production and 40 apiculture farmers in modern beekeeping techniques.

These actions underscore the Government's determination to safeguard farmers' livelihoods, strengthen the nation's food independence, and build a resilient agricultural sector driven by innovation and partnership.

The Government of Saint Lucia also acknowledges the valuable contribution of regional and international partners, whose continued collaboration enhances agricultural development and rural resilience.

On World Food Day 2025, the Government extends its appreciation to every farmer, fisher, and agri-worker for their dedication to feeding the nation.
