Government has invested over $12 million in road reconstruction and rehabilitation in Choiseul and Saltibus.
A team comprising of Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, and Parliamentary Representative for Choiseul/Saltibus, Hon. Lorne Theophilus, along with other government officials, toured ongoing and recently completed road projects in the Choiseul/Saltibus constituency, yesterday.
To date, road work has been completed in Fiette and Morne Jacques Choiseul, at a cost EC$2,658,903.50 and $870,345.60 respectively.
Work is ongoing on the Balca and Daban roads at a total cost of EC$8, 518,966.04. Drainage works have also been completed along the road from Tete Morne through Park Estate to Saltibus.
Dr. Anthony said he is particularly happy with the response from community members.
“It was a joy to walk through these communities and feel the satisfaction and gratitude of the people,” he said. “We may not understand the full impact of such projects unless we walk in the shoes of the residents. These roads and communities have been neglected for some time now. The conditions of the roads were deplorable. Many residents were doubtful that such investments would be made in their communities, because many promises were made and broken in the past. My government promised and delivered. The people are happy, so I am happy.”
Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Philip J. Pierre said his ministry continues to work to address the plight of the public, despite the scarcity of resources. Like the Prime Minister, he was pleased to return to the communities, after delivering on a promise he made to them to rehabilitate the roads. The record, he said, speaks for itself.
“In one financial year, we have invested over $12 million in road reconstruction and rehabilitation in Choiseul and Saltibus. Apart from the projects visited today, remedial work has been undertaken in various parts, such as the Piaye - Saltibus road and farm access roads. While the fiscal situation is difficult, we feel and understand the plight of the people of Choiseul and moved to address it. These roads do not simply make access easier but they also increase the value of property and most importantly, have provided jobs for many residents.
“My Ministry will continue to prioritize and move to address critical roads in rural communities that are often forgotten. As we speak, the Banse - La Grace road is being reconstructed. There are several other projects underway, to address work left unfinished by the last administration and to deal with some of the Hurricane Tomas and Christmas Eve trough damages. I am exceedingly satisfied with the record of my Ministry thus far.”
The tour was led by Parliamentary Representative for Choiseul/Saltibus, Hon. Lorne Theophilus, who was accompanied by members of the Constituency Council.
