SAINT LUCIA HAS 667 ACTIVE REGISTERED NURSES WHO PLAY A PIVOTAL ROLE IN PROMOTING POPULATION HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs proudly joins the global healthcare community in celebrating the annual International Nurse’s Day 2024 on May 12th.

The theme chosen for this year’s celebration is: Investing in Nurses and the economic power of Care.

This is a call to action to reshape perceptions about the nursing profession, recognizing the substantial economical and societal benefits that strategic investments in the nursing profession can bring. Research has shown that investing in nursing, leads to improved patient outcomes, reduced healthcare costs, and a more sustainable healthcare system.

Nurses play a multifaceted role that extends far beyond the traditional realms of clinical care. While the main focus of nursing is on promoting health, preventing illness and providing direct patient care, nurses also serve a significant economic power through contributions to the healthcare industry and society as a whole.

Saint Lucia has 667 active nurses registered which constitutes the largest group of the health care workers. Their sheer numbers and diverse skill sets enable them to deliver services across various settings from hospitals, wellness centers, long term care facilities, prisons, doctors’ offices, hotels and the ports. By providing frontline care and support, nurses contribute to the efficient functioning of health systems, helping reduce hospital readmissions, prevent complications and improve patient outcomes thus reducing health care costs by minimizing the need for expensive interventions and treatments.

Nurses are essential drivers of health care innovation and improvement due to their intimate knowledge of patients’ needs and experiences and serve as advocates for quality improvement initiatives. This pivotal role in promoting population health and wellness has significant economic implications for society as a whole.

Nurses are also instrumental in optimizing resource allocation and utilization with the health system and contribute to the economic vitality of communities through their role as consumers and taxpayers. Additionally nurses engage in advocacy efforts to promote health care policies and legislation that advance social equity, access to care and health equity for underserved and at risk populations.

Therefore, as we celebrate our healthcare heroes recognizing their economic benefit, we recognize the numerous challenges faced by the nursing fraternity. The Ministry of Health continues to prioritize efforts and investments to ensuring that there are adequate numbers of nurses at the bedside and where needed the most, improved working conditions, ongoing mental health support and recognition of the contributions of nurses and midwives to health care.

On behalf of the Ministry of Health, I wish every Nurse and Midwife in St Lucia a joyous celebration. Do take time to reward yourselves recognizing that your daily sacrifice and devotion to the people of St Lucia does not go unnoticed.
