HON. CHARLES CADET SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN SEVERAL CAPACITIES, INCLUDING THAT OF PS.
Saint Lucia has lost an illustrious son of the soil. National Cultural Icon, Hon Charles Cadet, died Sunday, Jan. 17, after a prolonged illness. The renowned composer was 96 years old.
Mr. Cadet was born on Dec. 16, 1924 into a family with an intense love of music, and was well endowed with musical talent.
In a statement, the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) highlighted Mr. Cadet’s service to the government and people of Saint Lucia in a distinguished career of some 40 years. Hon Charles Cadet served in several capacities including Permanent Secretary, Counselor for Trade for The OECS sub–region from (1976-1986), and acting High Commissioner to London (1986-1987). He was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1987) and Saint Lucia Cross (2005) in recognition of his distinguished and outstanding services. He was the first recipient of the M&C Fine Arts Lifetime Achievement Award.
His compositions, “Chanson Marianne” and “Poinsettia Blossoms” remain classics and maintain their relevance in today’s society.
Minister with responsibility for Culture and Creative Industries, Sen. Hon. Fortuna Belrose, described Hon. Charles Cadet as a national and treasured gem.
“On behalf of the government and people of Saint Lucia, we really want to extend sincere condolences to the family of Hon. Charles Cadet. He contributed significantly to the development of our folk music. He was also a public servant extraordinaire. What I got most out of him was his continued desire to perfect his craft in every possible way,” she said.
Mr. Cadet, over the years, has received many awards for his musical genius and service to country.
