The playing field is one of four recreational facilities on the island that will be outfitted with lights.

The Marchand Grounds recently came alive with floodlights following the completion of the first of several lighting projects.

The Lighting of Recreational Facilities Program, an initiative of the Government of China (Taiwan), will provide lighting for several of the island’s recreational facilities, in order to assist with improving sporting and community activities.

Under the program, four recreational facilities will be installed with lights—the Marchand Grounds in Castries, the Philip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort, the Anse La Raye playing field and the La Ressource playing field in Dennery.

Prime Minister Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre, and Minister for Youth and Sports. Hon. Shawn Edward, along with Taiwanese Ambassador James Chang, were among the officials present at the lighting of the Marchand Grounds.

“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), I would like to extend my congratulations to you for the completion of this project,” Ambassador Chang said. “These efforts will not only accommodate the wish to host the Commonwealth Games in 2017, but also provide opportunities for neighboring communities to utilize these facilities for sports and other activities. It is a good example of the benefits that can be brought to the Saint Lucian people through cooperation programs.”

The Lighting of Recreational Facilities Program was launched at the Marchand Grounds in March. The lighting ceremony was held last Sunday.
