The National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC), through its Universal Service Fund (USF) office, launched its latest Community Wi-Fi Project - the Marchand Playing Fields Project. The initiative is funded under the USF’s mandate to help bridge the digital divide by providing free high-speed internet access to two key sporting facilities in Marchand, the Community Center, and surrounding residential areas.
At the official launch, Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Castries East, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, highlighted the profound impact of this project. He stated that the Mindoo Phillip Park and Marchand Grounds —legendary spaces in Saint Lucian sports have been anchors for sports and youth development. Now, through this initiative, athletes, residents, and visitors in the environs can unlock new pathways—connecting them to online learning, e-sports, and real-time coaching resources that will elevate their potential.
Thanks to a five-year partnership between the NTRC and Cable & Wireless Communications (Flow) the two sporting facilities, the Community Centre and environs now have the added advantage of digital connectivity, these facilities are set to inspire and empower even more success stories.
Key stakeholders on the project are Sports Saint Lucia Inc., NTRC/USF, and Cable and Wireless Saint Lucia (FLOW).
Also present at the event were Hon. Kenson Casimir, Minister for Youth and Sports, and Hon. Stephenson King, Senior Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, who both reinforced the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for community development.
