WASCO TO STRENGTHEN ITS NATIONAL SANITATION RESILIENCE PROGRAM AT CARIBSAN 2 TECHNICAL FORUM
The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) is set to participate in the CARIBSAN Technical Forum in Martinique, a gathering of regional and international partners dedicated to the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions for wastewater management. This mission marks a critical phase in Saint Lucia’s transition toward sustainable sanitation, specifically focusing on the use of Constructed Wetland technology to address the region’s evolving environmental challenges.
The forum facilitates a technical exchange between experts from Saint Lucia, Dominica, and Cuba, alongside partners from Martinique and Guadeloupe. The agenda prioritizes the optimization of planted filters; a technology that uses specialized tropical flora to naturally purify wastewater. By reviewing progress on regional demonstration sites and sharing operational data, the forum ensures that Saint Lucia’s infrastructure is not only technically sound but also resilient against the unique pressures of the Caribbean climate, including tropical storms and nutrient sensitivity in coastal ecosystems.
For Saint Lucia, this collaboration directly informs the modernization of the Black Bay wastewater system. The community currently relies on an aging network where the existing infrastructure frequently underperforms, leading to the discharge of inadequately treated effluent into the Ravine Michel and the surrounding coastal zone. The new Constructed Wetland system at Black Bay mimics natural filtration processes, providing a climate-resilient alternative that is less susceptible to mechanical failure during power outages or extreme weather events. By delivering high-quality treated effluent, the system mitigates nutrient runoff, providing essential protection for the island’s coral reefs and marine biodiversity; natural assets that are vital to Saint Lucia’s blue economy and public health.
As WASCO continues to align its operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6), this initiative represents more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it is a shift toward a circular water economy. The knowledge gained from the Technical Forum will be integrated into the final design and long-term management of the Black Bay pilot, serving as a blueprint for the future expansion of eco-conscious sanitation technologies across the island.
Through this regional partnership, WASCO remains at the forefront of sustainable utility management, ensuring that Saint Lucia’s water and wastewater sectors evolve in harmony with the environment.
