THE MINISTER FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS THE POTENTIAL OF THE OCEAN TO AID ECONOMIC GROWTH WHILE ADVOCATING FOR ITS PROTECTION.

Saint Lucia recently observed World Innovation and Creativity Day under the theme "the Ocean’s Call: Innovate, Sustain, Prosper".

In an address to mark the observance, the Minister with responsibility for Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology and Vocational Training, Hon. Shawn Edward, highlighted the need for innovative approaches to the care and management of the marine sector.

"Through the growing blue economy, we are redefining our relationships with the sea from one of hardship to one of hope, empowerment and sustainable growth. Over the years we've seen the rise of vibrant fisheries, the central role of our waters in tourism and the blossoming of culinary industries rooted in marine culture."

The minister suggested that opportunities presented by the blue economy have not yet been fully realized.

“Innovation in the blue economy means more than new ideas, it means sustainable action. It means pioneering renewable marine energy, advancing aquaculture and preserving marine ecosystems for generations to come. One shining example is our growing sea moss industry, which has brought meaningful income and opportunity to our coastal communities. It is proof that when creativity meets sustainability, prosperity follows.

Minister Edward said a courageous approach to innovation and environmental protection can improve and enhance the industry.

"As we continue to explore new frontiers within the blue economy, we must also embrace our shared  responsibility to protect this vital resource. The ocean's biodiversity regulates our climate and as small island developing states or seeds, we are especially vulnerable to climate change. Safeguarding the ocean isn't optional, it is absolutely essential.”

World Innovation and Creativity Day was observed on April 21.
